"What is 'serving'?" I asked a nun today. "To love," she replied. Unlike "selling," serving involves doing something primarily for the benefit and goodwill of another person without expecting anything in return. The process itself brings you joy. Selling, on the other hand, is result-oriented and involves making a deal, as shown in the diagram that depicts the relationship between serving and selling.
When it comes to corporate leadership, the far left position of the diagram may make you look like a saint, but it's not very practical. The far right position is more focused on a deal and can appear hypocritical. The best position for a good leader is in the center-left, where personal interests are secondary, but they are still responsible for the company's goals. In comparison, the center-right position places personal interests as the primary focus. This "grey zone" requires juggling and review with the help of a coach.
A smile can either scare a child or bring joy. Regardless, the smile needs to be authentic and cannot be faked. Personal integrity is the key to sustainable success. Therefore, it's essential not to fake it because you can't. Authenticity is crucial in serving others and being a good leader.
In conclusion, serving involves doing something for the benefit of others without expecting anything in return, and it brings joy. When it comes to corporate leadership, the best position is in the center-left, where personal interests are secondary, but the company's goals are still the primary focus. Authenticity and personal integrity are essential for sustainable success.
