Coaches need coaches and counsellors too
Today, while teaching my son tennis, I noticed another player practicing his serve in the adjacent court. Though he hit the target sometimes, his body form was distorted, and he was at risk of getting injured. An hour later, I looked again, and there was no improvement - no increase in speed or accuracy. This made me reflect on my own past and the blind spots and repetitive behavior patterns that I've struggled with. Without suggestions and corrections from others, I would have been stuck in the same cycle.
Over the past 20 years, I've worked with more than ten coaches and counselors to break through my blind spots and overcome obstacles. It's been both a joyful and painful experience. If that player seeks guidance from a tennis coach and couples it with his perseverance, he'll make accelerated progress.
This reminds me of Timothy Gallwey's formula P=p-i in his book, "The Inner Game of Work." Performance (P) equals potential (p) minus interference (i). When that player eliminates unnecessary movement, he'll conserve energy and experience transformational "aha" moments.
Blind spots are like buses - one goes, and another comes. So, be prepared!
Love. David
